With the run up to the Halloween special becoming more and more frantic in the last two weeks, the idea of who and what to do for the November poster was starting to weigh on my mind. For some reason October turned into a whirlwind – with a few personal crisis thrown in for good measure so suddenly I was left with a week to make the poster happen. Luckily I had Pinky DeVille on the case and after a few chats we had decided that she would provide me with a photo (something I don’t usually do as I want to make sure I get the image I want to illustrate as right as possible on the photo from the word GO!) But time was against me so what could I do. Needless to say Pinky’s pic was ace and took but a few intense hours to illustrate into Novembers poster, her cheeky cheesecake record fan danceesque pose is a piping hot one!
Pinky is a homegrown South Yorkshire burlesque artist and has been making a name for herself in the uk as an act to watch out for.
You may be interested to know that the two records pinky posed with for the illustration were Mrs Mill’s Non-Stop Honky-Tonk Party and Hot City Nights – 16 of the best cheesy rock songs!
There is one thing lacking on the poster for November however, my name…! I’m handing the reigns over to Dj Den Iniquity for the evening as I have a prior engagement singing at a charity gig in Sheffield – yep I sing too… I could have not put the “Bones” in a better pair of hands so make sure you head on down to the Green room on Friday 25th November for BoneShaker. If you want a poster signing i have heard that the lovely Pinky will be down…

WOW, What a night! The first ever BoneShaker Halloween special was more than I could ever have hoped it to be. From weeks before folks seemed to be suggesting things and organisisng costumes, decorations and even sorting out a projector so we could show the proposed B-movie clips during the evening. There was a lot that could go wrong but setting up on the evening my usual nervousness (I usually get at the impending evening under my control) was filled with a genuine belief that everyone – especially the staff at the green room -actually really likes the BoneShaker nights and will go quite far out of their way to help out with the evening and to make it a success. So a Big thanks to PJ, Alex, Carmen, Bex (sorry i didn’t guess who you were dressed up as – I didn’t get the question and wondered if you were asking if I KNEW you .. ) and the rest of the staff that night.
It seemed to also be a night of meeting new friends and widening the range of the BoneShaker brand. Like minded individuals came from as far as Nottingham to attend, and I thanks them so much for doing so. Thanks to Craig for braving Sheffield on a Friday! Crai runs the hoochie coochie Nottingham night and it looks like a mutual guest spot is arranged for early next year so keep watching this space. Check them at:

Enter the fabulous Missy Tassles!
My guest for the evening was the amazing Missy Tassles. I have to confess I knew little about the extraordinary sounds that the lovely lass would be playing but her set BURST my blood vessels in pounding, trashy raucousness that I was unable to stop moving my feet and felt an overwhelming urge to jitter! You can hear it all for yourself in the sets and I thank her so much for adding something very special, spooky and far out for Halloween! – Everything else I played especially during the V’s set sounded tame..
nice!!!! I’d also like to thank her for being the most beautifully drunk guest I had and hiding it so well and remaining so professional right until the end… Where I poured her into a taxi.
So on the whole we set the bar pretty high for not only the next Halloween bash (if we get into next year) but the next BoneShaker. Due to a prior gig (yep I’m actually singing) I will be handing the reigns over to the incomprabable DJ Den iniquity for November and I’m sure it will be a complete blast!
I’ll see you back in December the 23rd! for the christmas doo! In the meantime enjoy the sets from the BoneShaker Halloween Special 2011.

Halloween HAS to be the best time to design a poster for BoneShaker. Like the Sports illustrated “swim suit edition” in August or “Hello” magazine the morning after the oscars! The October BoneShaker is a B-Movie special incorporating dialogue from the movies over the spooky, weird and wonderful sounds of my guest Missy Tassles and I.
This months stunning and spooky BoneShaker is the evil (but in a nice way) Miss Perversity Lurks – burlesque star, and creator of my own personal favourite burlesque act EVER… EVER!!! I don’t care who you are or how famous you may think you are. Perversity lurks and the glory boys “Britannia” act absolutely left me gobsmacked when I saw it in a very small room (packed with folk) at one of the first burly Q’s!! Unfortunately I don’t know if it was ever captured on video…
Miss Lurk’s persona, utter mind-blowing exuberance and all out Whoaaaaarness (if that’s not a word it SHOULD be) makes her a sure fire winner for the first ever BoneShaker Halloween Special poster. As a BoneShaker regular I’m sure she will be on hand to sign a few on the night and generally “lurk” around giving off the vibe of B-Movie sultry seductress!!
The idea behind the poster was to give electric life to the records and make them LIVE!! a la frankensteins DJ! i think we got it in there. The initial picture taken to work with involved Miss Lurks standing in her bath as it was the only room in her house with enough light to take a picture – I also had her 6inch doc jumping at least 2 feet off the ground wanting a cuddle as I took the pic. I’ve spent LESS weird evenings but I guess its all appropriate for the Halloween B-Movie Special poster. I would have felt better if I had been served a bucket of blood by “ego” upon entering the house through its creaking door…or left to the maniacal laughter of my hostess!
Thanks SO SO much to Miss Lurks for being my BoneShaker Girl this month and also to Missy Tassles, my guest DJ fo the forthcoming night.
Friday October 28th, The Green Room Sheffield, FREE admission from 8pm till late.

This year it was decided to use some of the amazing photographs taken by our resident Photographer Dave “Ravey Davey” Glossop of DarkStar imaging to make a calendar featuring full colour, A4 photography of 12 of the most glittering and award winning stars of the UK’s burlesque, cabaret and circus scenes – All of whom have appeard at Burly Q over the past 12 months!

After the relatively manic night that was the Hula Surf Special it was nice to get back to playing good ol’ BoneShaker material! My guest Dj MARK was on great form and played some cracking tracks both in the solo set and the Dan V Mark section. My early set focused on some smooth sounds I have not played before – I find the early section the best time to showcase tunes that are slightly mellower or slower than the usual floor fillers – this doesn’t mean to say they are all not KILLER TRACKS!!
Also I was practicing (with mixed success) to mix in some dialogue from old adverts, b-movies and public service films as a run-up to the B-Movie Halloween Special planned for October 28th. it sounds great when I get it right as you will hear… and not so good when I don’t!
Thanks again to Dj Mark and all the regulars for making it another great BoneShaker.

I started making record boxes as soon as I started having enough records to put in them. They are all “one – offs” and hand painted by your truly! Made from marine plywood and using the best components available. These babies are made to order but depending n the design they cost between £70 for a plain colour and £150 for an intricate design.
The Black & White Monster Box was a personal project to just start with a blank canvas (or box) and doodle. A black paint pen and a couple of nights of work was all it took to cover the box. I had to try and not do any one character too large and cheat. The whole of the box is covered including the bottom. I put a few “in jokes” on the box too like “Jump Hero”, a play on guitar hero but the fact i play jump blues records. “Dan 4 Lottie” refers to my Dj Name Dan Sette and my wifes Burlesque stage name of Lottie L’Etoille.
There is always something new to see on the box when I look at it. Something I never remembered drawing.
Following on from last months Hula Surf Poster, featuring Starla Bright, it was time for the other half of Star Bazaar Burlesque group to strike a pose for BoneShaker! The delectable Scarlett D’Lyte is this months BoneShaker girl and was so great to work with and heling me in my stupid ideas for poses and trying to get a position right in front of an imaginary truck!
I had the idea for the poster for a while and had, in fact drawn u the truck about 2 months previously. The shot of the truck was one found on the “tinternet”. I have no ideas who’s truck it is but I would LOVE one just the same! So awesome. Anyway, I had this shot in mind however with the lovely lady placing a record in the back of the truck. I had Scarlett in all sorts of “place the box in the imaginary truck” positions – of which she was great fun and in the end managed to capture the pose I wanted – And a great behind in the process!! It has been mentioned that the BoneShaker posters enhance the “top” proportions of the models to excess and I can only reply that this is “artistic license” etc etc.. However I can certainly say that this months “assets” are firmly behind Ms D’Lyte (Thanks to Starla for the heads up – so to speak!) I can’t thank Scarlett Enough for being this months BoneShaker Girl! – BoneShaker will be held on Friday 23rd September 2011 at the Green Room Sheffield.
Scarlett’s next Burlesque performance will be “Burlesque Dreams Presents…Barnsley Burlesque Extravaganza!” which is on 30th September 2011 at Barnsley Trade Club. The photo below is taken by philwhitcomb : www.philwhitcombphotographer.co.uk

Well! WHAT A NIGHT! Thanks to everyone that made it down to the evening. Folks were decked out in their finest Hawaiian garb or swing sets. kudos MUST go to my poster girl Starla Bright for wearing the HUGEST hibiscus flower I have EVER seen in her hair. She looked amazing though and provided me hours of fun “ducking” whenever she turned her head (never got bored of that joke).
Slight panic to the start of the evening as rather than the usual 2 hours to set up – I somehow got 15 minutes and, please note, I had an additional 4 6ft blow up palm trees to inflate, a grass wreath to fix to the bar as well as the usual decks, signs etc… i was slightly stressed out at the beginning! Still I relaxed after sipping a little rum from my cocoanut and got playing some tunes. As usual the set list I had compiled went RIGHT out the window and the night flowed with a mix of hula surf, jump swing for the Lindy Hoppers that turned up and cut some rug in amazing style and effort – they should be praised if only for finding space in the GreenRoom to dance! There was not as many surf classics as I had hoped to play but you will hear some in here I’m sure.
DJ Scott played some great stuff incorporating jump, surf, dance craze and northern soul (appeasing the drunk northern soul requests) So here in all its Five hours (or so)of glory is the BoneShaker hula Surf Special!
Roll on September!
