Resto-cal : Inspiration and Definitions

Resto-cal is best described in the title, A restored beetle with that california "edge". The california look scene started in the mid to late 60's when performance companies such as the legendary EMPI Corp. started making performance parts for VW beetles. A scene quickly grew around making these dubs quicker by modding the engine, taking off all the chrome trim and lowering the car to have a "nose down stance". Cal-look is still abig part of the VW scene,so where does "resto-cal" fit in.

Where as cal-look is concerned with an emphasis on making the car quick, resto-cal is as much concerned with the LOOK of the car as a huge engine. All original chrome parts are kept and, indeed, added to as many points can be picked up for the amount of period parts added to the cars. Roof racks, window visors, period air conditioning in the form of "swamp" coolers, stone guards are all part of the resto-cal concept. Resto-cal cars are almost ALL pre 67 looking cars but the earlier the better for a good "period" feel.

Some of the best resto-cal cars are owned by the famous "german folks car club" visit their site and you can be blown away by the detail, blinded by the chrome and intrigued by the bizarre period accessories. view it here.
