Chapter 2 :
buying the bug
Now it must be said, and I am the first to admit
this, I am shit with mechanics. In fact anything technical like
DIY, Cars, Motors...Infact anything with a michine I can break.
Fortunately i "kinda" now what I am doing in theory with
bugs. I knew where the heater channels were and that that was the
first place things were going to go. I knew rust when I saw it...
I also knew that for £1500 I was not going to get a show winner...and
I realised that when I pulled into Steves garages just off city
road in Sheffield.
If you have never met Steve he is a BIG personality.
BIG! He showed me the car, told me that because it was Swedish it
was pretty solid as the Swedes don't use salt on the road... ( he
could have told me anything...I just nodded and kept looking at
all the rust on it..I ummed and ahhhed for a while then he tossed
me the keys and I took it for a spin.
Having not been in a beetle for years it took a
while to get back into it. The indicator stuck, the wind whilstled
through the quarter window like someone was boiling the kettle, there
were no seatbelts...it was fantastic...
I was concerned that I was going to have to spend
a lot to get this bugger fixed up and so I uhmmed and ahhhed and
decided to leave it and have a think. On the way back home I called
Charlie and she was like "what are you DOING???" It sounds
great...
I turned around, drove back and stuck £1500
in steves hand. I wanted to lowere it there and then. It was pretty
stock. I also needed some belts in the front as I wanted to take
my son Finn in it straight away... But these would have to wait
till I could order the parts and find someone to do the work...
